The Bald and the Beautiful

Bald Guy Greetings

Two packages have been arriving at my physical mailbox lately (isn’t it weird we now have to actually clearify the distinction between our physical and virtual mailbox?). One, the Moo Flickr cards. Two, some of the Bald Guy greeting cards.

And I’m ecstatic about both.

The Flickr Cards

Let us start with what arrived first. The Flickr-cards. For $19.99, you get 100 cards. That’s good value, folks. And I just ordered 10 Skype-cards for free.

The minicard-series takes on an old tradition of ‘calling cards’ — for situations where the business cards are too formal, and the number on the napkin is bound to get lost. They are smaller than your regular business cards, and with a free selection of your Flickr-photos on the front.

The only thing I'm having a slight problem with is the selection of typefaces. You can now choose between Georgia, Helvetica and Courier (nothing bad against Georgia, and certainly not about Helvetica, but I'd like to see something less overused). The only reasoning I can find for this is that Moo uses CSS/XHTML for rendering the previews of the cards; and the three typefaces is generally considered safe for web use, and can defult back to serif, sans-serif and monospaced.

However, I can see no reason why Moo could not have opted for a flash-based preview, for instance, and gone for better typography.

The cards, on the other hand, are the best alternative to your regular Hallmark-cards you’ll ever see. The cards are pure genius at work in it’s wit, humor and great sarcasm. With inscriptions such as “Wow, 35 years old. If this were the 1700s, you’d be dead.” and “Happy Anniversary! To be honest, we didn’t think it was gonna last.” — and hillarious illustrations (like the one at the top) the cards are really the best cards I’ve seen. And terrific typography doesn’t hurt, either.

I would’ve ordered more of their Christmas cards — but it seems they were running out. Perhaps a good reason to head over and buy at once? :P

(No, I did not get paid to write these. I really, really do love my dead-tree-stuff — paper.)

Hey man,

Just saw your write up on our Bald Guy Greeting cards.

Thanks, we appreciate it.

We’re printing up 14 new cards and should have them ready by the end of November.

Check back then. I’ll cut you a deal on the cards. Just email me directly.

Thanks again. I like your site and like the way you write.

No, I’m not gay. I just like your site. Good luck.

Truly a funny hairless straight guy, in other words.. =)

I’m already looking forward to the new cards! And 14 of them, even! Wow.. You’re really being productive.. (Makes me think of a good couple of projects I have on my own, which I could be more productive on…)
