...the Macs, that is...

Okay, who am I kidding?! Of course I want one! The new 24“ iMacs are lovely, in terms of specs and price. But still, the mini seems to me to be the real goody.

But what about the iFlick Movie Store?

Well, hopefully on the 12th. Which’ll give the blogosphere just a little more time to whine about what we want Apple to show us.

And surely, I can be no worse - so here's my list of what I want need:

  1. Films must be reasonably priced. I pay about $15 for a DVD. And then I get the cover, and a product that doesn’t disappears the instant my HD decides to say good night. I will not pay anything above that for a download. If my download is going to cost me more than that - I’m not doing it. Not via Apple, at least.
  2. I want all the same content as on the DVD. If I’m actually paying to download films, I’m refusing to miss out on the “Behind-the-scenes” or the commentaries.
  3. I want to bring the films with me on my iPod, to play it on my friend’s TV
  4. I want my downloads to be fast and painless. I’m not demanding 20 sec download times - but Apple should be able to compress the filesize to the minimum, and the speed of it's (X)servers to the maximum...
  5. And I want to buy films from any store, regardless of where I live!

Is that too much to ask?!

I’m so |—-| close to buy a 24” iMac, but’ll probably go for a 20”. I think 24” is a little too large.

What I really miss however, is a builtin TV/Tuner-card. Oh, that’s something I’d really like in macs.

Yup! I know what you mean. I was thinking of doing a writeup on the future of Front Row, and media on mac, and I still can’t see why Apple hasn’t put a tuner-card in there already!

I’m currently using a EyeTv 200 external tuner card; which I’m of course very pleased with.

However, this is still one more box on my desk, which I’d love to have removed…

As for the 24” vs. 20”:
I have a 20” one. First of all, I travel a bit, for prolonged periods. (Longer than I feel comfortable using the old and battered iBook for.) 20” is just enough to carry around. I think it’d take a lot more for me to carry around the 4 extra inches…

Also, I have a 19” screen in addition to the 20”, which adds up to a total of 39” of screen. And I feel this is a lot more efficient, as well - as I can then work with for example the CSS on one screen, and the XHTML on the other, instead of having them both on the same screen.

Please do!

I’ll order my 20” next week, I can’t wait, literally! It’ll be my first own mac.

Wow, the eyeTV was expensive, but I’m probably buying one of those too. You could tape the tuner under your desk to save space :O

39” of screen? Aren’t they supposed to be measured diagonally? :p
But as you would say, “I catch your drift” ;)

Yeah - I was considering weather or not I could get away with the “39-inch” theory… =P

Hmm… Perhaps I’ll just go buy an Apple 30” Cinema-screen… (drewl)

…hmm… Was the EyeTv really that expencive? Can’t even remember paying for it… Bought it with the mac, and closed my eyes when I burnt the plastic… :P

You bought it with the mac? From Apple Store? I can’t even find it there.

Hm, most of the prices I found on different EyeTV-models varies from 200€ to 300€, which I think it’s a little expensive, but I didn’t really do a huge research.

I wouldn’t mind using a second external monitor, however. I already have a 19”. Do you know if I have to buy some kind of upgrade or adapter to hook up a second screen, or is it just plug ‘n’ play?

By the way, I’ll buy a second 50” monitor, then I’ll have more INCHES THAN YOU HAHA! ups hehe :x

Hehe… You do that… :P

Well, you have to buy an adapter, like the one you use on the MacBook, but that’s it… So it’s sort of plug-and-play, but the expencive kind.

As for the EyeTV - I bought them both at the store… A bit more expencive, I know - but the whole thing was kind of an impulse buy… :D

I just woke up one morning, at half past five, and figured - “Hey! I don’t see why I shouldn’t buy an iMac today…” :P And so I did.

I don’t think €200 is much for a tuner- and capture-card of this caliber, really… But you could always go for something less powerful, like the Miglia TVMicro.

That one’s only $100 on the Apple Store, and uses the same software and remote as the EyeTV…

Now - there are some things that needs to be said about the EyeTV, though…

First of all, the remote really sucks. I don’t know if it’s the remote itself, or the IR-reciever on the box, but you have to press the buttons for like half an hour before it finally reacts…

Then there’s the fact that, whilst you /can/ pause, rewind, fast-forward and all the other stuff that TiVo does - you can’t rewind, and record “from the past”…

You can only record live TV, in other words. (You can of course, rewind, while you’re recording - but not the other way around…)

I’ve contacted Elgato, but have yet to get any response regarding if this is going to be a feature in future versions… If I do get a response in the near future, I’ll let you know…
