R.I.P. Internet Explorer

| | Comments (20)

Internet Explorer LogoThe discussion has been going on for quite a while now - and several conclusions has been reached. But now it’s final: Internet Explorer for Mac is dead! It has been dead for Microsoft since January, and I hereby declare it dead for designers as well!

Microsoft.com: Internet Explorer is no longer available for download.

Microsoft Internet Explorer was declared dead by Microsoft a while back - and has been so by many designers as well. Twisted Intellect actually looks fairly good in IE/Mac, but that is simply due to the simplicity of the design, and the way I built the code.

Now, even if you want to cross-check your site in IE/Mac, you'd have a hard time doing so, as Microsoft has taken it off its servers, and it is no longer a part of OS X.

The state of IE/Mac

So, how are things going for Internet Explorer? Do people use it? Do people design for it? Let's have a look-see...

MSN.com in IE/MacMicrosoft has not only abandoned the software, but even MSN.com looks horrid in the browser. Microsoft.com doesn’t look too good either, but that one looks as bad in any browser...

ShaunInman.com in IE/Mac

Even Shaun Inman seems to have given up on Internet Explorer - which leaves something of a visual train-wreck... But hey! Best way to kill it, eh?

CameronMoll.com in IE/MacA displaced sidebar, jumpy headlines and some other glitches is what awaits IE/Mac users at Cameron Moll’s Authentic Boredom.

Bartelme.at in IE/MacWolfgang Bartelme does seem to have tried to make it, at least usable in IE, but there are some very nasty glitches indeed. Yet another nail in the coffin...

The New York Times

The final nail in the coffin, however, comes from Khoi Vinh, and the New York Times’ website. When I saw this, I decided that I might as well delete IE from my Mac, had it not been for the fact that I would have a heck of a time finding it again, If I ever changed my mind... :P

Good ridence. IE really needs to go. I doubt it will though, especially for Windows-based computers.

Well, yes. On Windows-PCs IE is never going to leave, as long as it comes with the OS.

But then again, albeit its horrid rendering on Windows - it’s at least a little bit better than the Mac version MS put out in ancient times…

So - let the alternatives be known on Windows, and let IE be buried forever on Mac!

Surfing on Internet Explorer for Mac used to be a pain in the neck because of a ton of CSS compatibility issues and just regular stupidity from the browser itself.

Hallelujah for IE/Mac’s death!
