CNN / 666
No, seriously, no pun intended! It's just that I'm too lazy to write two posts... First off, CNN, as we all know, got a new visual profile yesterday. This has to be debated carefully, right?
The good
Overall, it doesn't look too bad, really... I quite like the clean look - and the new large, 'newspapery' titles and supers looks amazing!
Additionally, the globe-animation is one of the best of such I've seen in a long time - it gives me a feeling of authenticity, modernism, power and it blends in with the rest wonderfully.
As for the tickerbar; I love the new solution, where they've stepped away from the scrolling line that noone ever read - and the new color-coding system is a good touch...
The bad
...however, I'm not quite sure that the clean look will help promote cnn in the same way that the previous one did.
As the last style seemed to say
“BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, ATTENTION!!!!!”The new design just say “Design. I'm cool.”
This, of course may prove to be either a very good thing, or a very bad one...
Scenario a) Hotels etc. may choose bbc world over cnn in their receptions, as bbc world now looks more serious of the two...
Scenario b) Hotels etc. choose fox news, as they still look the way cnn did... :O
The ugly
It's still cnn. :P Well, besides that, it lacks a lot of details in my opinion. I think they could've done more to the design, once they were at it. I'm not saying that they should've gone overboard, and had bells-and-whistles all over the place (like they had in the previous one); but a little bit more... A gmt-based clock somewhere; a stockticker (oh, god, someone give me a stockticker!!!)
Then there is the 666-bit, then... My hometown, Stavanger, Norway, is the official, European capital of culture in 2008. In that regard, there is a large billboard in the middle of town, counting down to the big event; and yesterday, the counter was at “666”... Be afraid. Be veeery afraid!
