Is Iran Right in Expelling CNN Reporters?
Iran has decided to ban cnn from reporting from the region. The reason is an errorous translation in regards to the Iranian nuclear program.
Where the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that
“Iran has the right to nuclear energy”the cnn quoted him as saying that
“the use of nuclear weapons is Iran's right.”
In my opinion, a free and (as far as possible) objective press is one of the main building blocks in contemporary societies.
However, the cnn has never been anywhere remotely close to objective, or even unbiased in cases regarding 'The usa vs. the rest of the World'... And I'm not saying this just to be anti-cnn or anything. This is to their own admittance. When America goes to war, so does the cnn.
So when the cnn decides to mislead it's audience, by wrongfully quoting the Iranian President - I for one have a hard time believing it's all a coincidence.
In fact, the bottom line in the Iran-debate is that Iran isn't at all doing anything wrong!
In fact, if you should happen to have a pond to spare - I suggest you spend it on Adrian Hamilton's January 12th article in the Independent. Iran has approved surveillance programs, to ensure transparency into the way Iran is developing and using it's nuclear resources on small-scale.
Yes, you could argue that Iran isn't the most trustworthy of countries; that it get the uranium from Russia - and that Iran is going to build big bombs, and blow us all to Kingdom Come.
And, yes - Iran probably hasn't proven itself trustworthy yet. And yes, it could very well get it's uranium 'from Russia with love'. And... well... Iran could build big bombs. But would they?
The reason that Iran isn't regarded as trustworthy, in my opinion, is that the international community has to very little extent given Iran the opertunity to show itself as such in these issues. I truly believe that Iran is ever the more dangerous as is, with the eu and us breathing down their necks for things they hasn't even done yet(!) than if we were to give them the benefit of the doubt, and let them continue under surveillance...
And why should Iran get it's power from Russia? The rest of the world doesn't trust Russia 100% after the gas-dispute of late; but Iran should have to?! I'd like to see Josep Borrell Fontelles' reaction, being forced to outsource it's energy production to a partner, known to be unreliable; when a system for production was already in place...
And c'mon... The us sees wmds that arn't even there! I honestly don't think Iran would dare produce an A-bomb under the current circumstances - and if they were planning to do so; they wouldn't invite un-inspectors to the party!
As for the cnn-ban; I don't think you can really blame the Iranian government... Not only does the Americans try to deny them the right to produce their own energy - the American media even tries to make them look like asshats!
We mustn't get too cought up in cautioness - that we loose our sense of fairness...
UPDATE: Iran lifted the ban on cnn on the 17th of January, as the cnn apologized for the initial mix-up. The basic principal still remains, though - and I personally don't think it was morally required of Iran to lift the ban...
UPDATE 2: The article mentioned, though being worth well more than a pound, is actually published for free, here.
