AJAX. The new animated GIFs?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all pro more powerful interaction with server, and there are many genious Web 2.0-applications that depends on the technology. But let's look at a bit of webdesign history here...
1996 The web is amazing. A wonderful place, filled with strong colors and animated *.gifs, and font is taking up most of the source code...
2001 The web is still amazing. We've deleted all of the font-tags, and put the information into css-sheets instead. When we want things to move; we simply use dhtml instead of *.gifs! And the ISDN lines is working on the max to transfer the riddicilusly heavy Flash-files used by the most savvy designers...
2006 The web is no more! It's now Web 2.0! We still use css, but we laugh long and hard at dhtml. Now we use face to make stuff move. And the most savvy designers use ajax and Flash!
Am I the only one who sees the connections?! I'm tempted to referr to the “Evolution of a Programmer” article right about now...
How come, just as we have a simple, semantic code; just as we realize that webpages look best when they don't move - we develop bloated programming languages to make stuff move again?!

Let me clearify a few things... When I say that I look at ajax as the new *.gifs, what I'm referring to is that - like the animated GIFs, ajax is fully overused, and often used for the wrong tasks...
There is nothing wrong with ajax as such, nor is there anything wrong with the GIF format... There is something wrong with amateur web designers who use technologies for the wrong purposes, just because they can!

Tor says that GIF is back in, only in a non-tacky form…
Personally I havn’t seen an animated GIF in quite a while, except for in ads… And I can’t quite see where I’d use a GIF-animation in a design situation…
If you mean static GIFs, I’d say that GIF was never out in the cold… However, PNG is a much better format for that type of images…
And besides, the point here isn’t weather or not GIF is a good format for animation or not. I’m just pointing out that in my opinion FACE is frightenly similar to DHTML, only with the JS more stantarized; and that AJAX is being terribly misused…
FYI: Ajax has nothing to do with animation. ;-)
Also, Tasteful animation is needed when sending an Ajax request in some situations. It’s just good interaction design. You should always show the user that something just happened and visual effects have replaced the page refresh.
I do agree that some websites/applications go seriously overboard (hence the word tasteful) though.
We know we are in trouble when designers and developers use Javascript animation just because it’s easy and they could.
I know AJAX doesn’t have anything to do with ani. FACE does, though…
And what I have a problem with is that FACE basically is nothing more than good ol’ DHTML with a separate .js… And c’mon.. I can’t see a world where the tasteless 1997-ish use of FACE doesn’t outnumber the tasteful uses…
I also have a problem with people who think they use AJAX, when what they in fact are doing is the most simple form of JavaScripting…
There are sites like DarkEye (dark-i) who do a splendid job at AJAX vs. animation and I’m all for those who do such a splendid job.. But that’s no more than 0,01% of the sites out there!
Even the creator of FACE is able to do tasteful stuff with it!
