Should We Design for IE/Mac?
Apple doesn't support it, Microsoft doesn't support it, why should anyone else?
I'm talking, of course, about IE/Mac.
I'm not the first to ask the question; both Ran and Steve has made up their minds on the subject... But here's mine, anyway..
Internet Explorer 5,0 for Mac has not been updated since June 2003, and Microsoft will no longer support the browser, as soon as 2005 ends...
Additionally, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download from Mactopia. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari.(Microsoft's product page)
On another page they actually say:
We recommend that you update your browser to Apple’s Safari or another browser of your choice.
Now, when Microsoft wants people to switch - is there really any point for us designer to even bother with supporting the browser..?
I cannot find IE/Mac anywhere in my Google Analytics statistics. I also think that a IE/Mac user would have little intrest in the stuff I write about...
But what if you're designing a site for a multinational corp? Should you then have to support all browsers? Yes.
If your target is wide enough, that you know that there will be IE/Mac users in there - of course you should support it. If not,- look at the support as a bonus...
support can be 100% perfect site render or gracefull degradation of layout…
That’s true, though I do feel that you shouldn’t degrade your design too much… I was, for instance faced with the coice to either cut or edit the Flickr-banner on the front page in IE/win…
The solution to keep isn’t ideal - but it’s better than cutting it, I think… Or..?
