Schibsted goes for Sesam

| | Comments (0)
Schibsted yesterday confirmed it's plan to launch a new search-engine onto the domain www.sesam.no. Launch is planned for the middle of Q4. This will be the Norwegian media group's attempt to take over the Norwegian indexing market,- batteling the title with the newly-merged Findexa and Eniro.

So, why is Schibsted entering the market now, and how much may they gain? Schibsted's own Mikal Rohde explains. Yeah, and it's exclusive, by the way...
The merge, announced towards the end of last week, sent the shares of Findexa through the stock exchange roof, and Schibsted sure has a challenge cut out for them.

Surely, the high market rating of Eniro-Findexa is also due to Google's economic sucsess at the moment, but it's not to be overlooked that the merged firms will make the definitively largest indexing-firm in Norway, possibly Scandinavia.

And Schibsted's Mikal Rohde tells JorgenArnor.com that the Google-effect does have a lot to do with entering the market just at this time. — The reason for Schibsted entering the searchmarket is that the development on the larger webservices has proven that the internet and websearch will be one of the most important media channels in the future.

He also hints that the Sesam will tap into exclusive content provided by several of the media group's members - amongst others, Norway's largest newspaper, the Aftenposten newspaper and Finn.no; — As you know, Schibsted has a lot of content (images, news and alike) that we want to use in our new services. We know the [Norwegian] market well, and we think we're able to prodce better and more relevant searches for the users, than [Google], Rohde proclaims.

No doubt Schibsted has put a lot of money in this project - building a searchenigne and a full index DB is a large task. Rohde assures me that all bases should be covered. But hey, what else could he say?

— We think we have an advantage in the fact that we're starting from the bottom, so that we'll be able to build all systems integrated into each other. We've launched an advanced, break-through way of combining structured and unstructured data, which provides a more efficient and correct database.

So, how will Schibsted fight this battle? Are we going to see Microsoft-style chair-throughing and internal memos threatening to 'kill fucking Findexa'?

No. Why would we? Schibsted's a media group, and therefore holds the key to unlimited branding through the members of that group - so we're most likely to see Sesam 'propaganda-campaigns'. — We're going to use our own channels (VG, Aftenposten, the regional newspapers, Finn.no etc.) to help us build brand, Rhode says, though adding, but the most important for us is that the brand is built positively because we're good at delivering good services.

Personally, I honestly hope Schibsted is able to pull this off. Even though Findexa has been the long leading contender on the indexing market, with it's rights to the Norwegian edition of the yellow pages, and with that service working properly, I plain just don't like Eniro.

Their logo sucks, they try to hard to be Google... I'm not saying schibsted.no is the best homepage in the world ;) but...

Neither Findexa, nor Eniro Norway has yet been able to comment.
