Telenor with HDTV-monopoly?
Telenor continues to claim monopoly to the Norwegians communications. Last time, it was the mobile phone market. Now, accourding to Aftenposten.no (Norwegian), it's the HDTV-market...
Telenor, which currently delivers cable and digital Tv-services, has joined NTV, owned by the Norwegian state broadcaster, NRK and Norwegian Tv2 in a bid for HDTV rights in Norway.
The HDTV services provided by NTV (=Telenor, it seems) will be about 50 channels, an upgrade from 18, when NTV last sent in an application.
Telenor, who has previously had telephone monopoly in Norway, currently has a large marketshare in the phone, mobile, 3G, dial-up, broadband, cable and DTV markets.
Norway will adapt the MPEG 4-standard for HDTV (which is about as poor quality as DVD), and NTV is going for full HDTV in 2010.
And with Telenor on the team, we're likely to see Microsoft-style business techniques, yet again. Modern Times Group, owner of TV3 and TV1000 will probably not apply for a go at the HDTV-market; and hence allowing for the monopoly to take place...
But good about the HDTV, though... --------
