Back to Telephone Monopoly
Telenor, previously known as the Norwegian phone monopolist, is trying to regain it's monopoly. Using Microsoft methods. As we all know, Microsoft has - for a long time - been trying to force it's competition out of the way, using its vast resources on lawyers and buying trademarks and copyrights.
Now, it seems, those same methods are used by Telenor to force it's competition out of the 3G-market. Telenor has actually bought every single Samsung Z500 mobile phone for the Norwegian market! And that's not all...
Now, it seems, those same methods are used by Telenor to force it's competition out of the 3G-market. Telenor has actually bought every single Samsung Z500 mobile phone for the Norwegian market! And that's not all...
Additionally, one of Sony Ericssons newest 3G phones have also been bought out.
It might seem that Telenor is preparing for whatever it is NetCom, the other main participant in the Norwegian telephone market, is going to launch in the very near future...
Exactly what that is, we don't know - and the people who know can't tell - but one MPSP salesman was able to tell me that it has to do with 3G services.
Most likely it's going to allow the user to download, or perhaps stream, multimedia content to the phone at a low cost. “It's going to be low-cost for you, and low-cost for NetCom”, the salesman told me, “You'll be hearing about it a lot in commercials - you're not going to miss it”.
I'm very interested in finding out exactly how NetCom will be able to make big money on low-cost 3G, just yet... One of the main principles of 3G right now, is that it's priced high, so that it may cover the cost of building and running the network.
Once those costs are covered, we're probably going to see a steep cut in prices. Hopefully, however, NetCom don't have to pay for the startup costs of the 3G network (they're probably just going to tap onto Telenor's networks, and pay a certain [overpriced] fee to them) and are therefore able to offer the consumers a low-cost service.
But I don't believe it's that simple. (Why would there be a big launch of something like that... That would be like... Launching Motorola ROKR 1 on a grand style... err... wait, that did happen...)
Most probably we'll see some sort of a deal between the consumer and NetCom, saying something in the style of “NetCom recieves your house, car, spouse, cat and dog, your soul, the key to the city and the right too torture you in any way we want to - you get 3G video phoning for 'only' $1 a minute...”
And I've got to admit - I'm not that keen to sell my soul to the devil... err... NetCom just yet.
By the way - I'm going to buy myself a Motorola phone - and no, it's not going to be the butt-ugly ROKR 1... Noone even bother retailing ROKR aka. the iPhone.
Big screen, nice OS (not Motorola's own, most likely) and good design. In general - everything the ROKR isn't...

I had a dream last night... You were there. You held my hand so tight. I thought I'd just die. Do you remember? When we used to have so much fun. I used to cry sometimes. Did you remember?
:D

Only thing I like about Telenor is that they upgraded my internet connection to 4Mbit instead of 1Mbit by a mistake. Telenor is way too big and greedy and they are not used to competition. Just like Microsoft. In fact the cooperate a lot with Microsoft, lunching much of their solutions very Microsoft friendly.
Oh and by the way.. If you’re suggesting I should get a but ugly tatoo on my forehead to make me a walking billboard sign, you are just so wrong!
It doesn’t have to be an ugly one… You could even get one with “JorgenArnor.com”? ;)
